The Rule That Keeps Life From Overflowing

You've probably heard the decluttering version: new sweater in, old sweater out. It works because it forces a trade instead of a pile-up.

😥 Author Greg McKeown built an entire philosophy around this trade-off in his book Essentialism: every “yes” is a “no” to something else, and if something new doesn't come with something old leaving, you're not adding — you're just accumulating.

🔄 Make the Trade

  1. Before you say yes to anything new — a meeting, a subscription, a volunteer shift — name what you're willing to let go of first.
  2. Can't name it? That's your answer. If nothing's leaving to make room, it's a no for now.
  3. Apply it to stuff, too. New item in the house, old item out. Same rule, same math.
  4. Run a monthly audit. Anything that snuck in without a trade — cut it loose before it becomes permanent.
