🙂 The Genuine Smile Effect
Why a real smile calms your body faster than a fake one.
The Smile Test Your Body Can't Fake Its Way Out Of
Psychologists Tara Kraft and Sarah Pressman had volunteers hold chopsticks in their mouths in one of three positions — one forced a neutral face, one a standard smile, one a full genuine, eye-crinkling smile — without ever telling anyone to actually smile. Everyone then completed the same stressful, timed task.
The people whose mouths had been shaped into a real smile recovered a calmer heart rate afterward, faster than the neutral-face group — even though none of them had consciously chosen to smile at all. Their bodies read the shape of the smile before their mood ever caught up to it.
Next time you're stuck in a stressful moment, deliberately crinkle your eyes into a real smile — even if you don't feel like it yet. This is one case where your nervous system takes its cue from your face, not the other way around.
