The Exercise That Beat Almost Everything Else Researchers Tried
In a landmark 2005 study, positive psychologist Martin Seligman and colleagues had people pick someone who had been kind to them but never properly thanked, then write and personally deliver a letter spelling out exactly why.
Of every exercise the researchers tested that same week, the gratitude letter won on both counts. What makes it work isn't just "being grateful" in the abstract — it's naming the specific thing someone did and the specific difference it made.
Think of one person who did something kind for you and never got a proper thank-you. Write them a short letter or text spelling out exactly what they did and why it mattered — bonus points for reading it to them out loud.
