⏱️ The Hack

Why a To-Do List Isn't Enough

A to-do list tells you what to do. It doesn't tell you when — so everything competes for the same vague “later,” and the loudest, easiest tasks usually win.

📅 Computer science professor and author Cal Newport, who has spent years studying deep focus, swears by time-blocking: giving every task an actual slot on your calendar, the same way you'd book a meeting.

The logic is simple — if it's not on the calendar, it's competing with your inbox for your attention. And your inbox always shows up first.

📅 Build Your Blocks

  1. Block your hardest task first. Give your most demanding work an early, protected slot — before meetings and messages start pulling at you.
  2. Batch similar work together. Emails in one block, deep work in another — no ping-ponging between modes.
  3. Pad every block by 25%. Estimate 60 minutes for something? Book 75. Buffer time is what keeps one late block from wrecking the whole day.
  4. Protect the block like a meeting. If you wouldn't cancel a client call for it, don't cancel your focus block for it either.
